PARIS， Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- French Prime Minister Manuel Valls is to announce his bid for the 2017 presidential election on Monday， according to local reports.
A statement released by his office said Valls would make an address at 6:30 p.m. local time (1730 GMT) at Evry town hall in south Paris.
Local media said the prime minister would unveil his decision to join the competition of left-wing primary next month to book a ticket for the Elysee Palace.
Speaking to Radio France Info， government spokesperson Stephane Le Foll said Valls' likely candidacy was "not a surprise."
In a recent interview， Valls had raised prospects of his taking part in the election after President Francois Hollande's declining popularity forced the ruling Socialist camp to seek a candidate able to get the wind back in their sails.
"The Left could get pulverised during the evening of the first round (of presidential election)，" Valls warned， but added that "whatever happens， the best interests of the country will influence my decision，" he added.
Valls' widely-anticipated move towards the Elysee Palace was further cemented after Hollande announced he was bowing out of the presidential race.
An ifop survey for Le Journal de Dimanche issued on Sunday showed the majority of socialist followers backed Valls bid to win the party ticket for presidential election.
Valls was named the chief of Hollande's executive team in 2014.
Five months ahead of the presidential election， the 54-year-old centrist premier has to unite the ranks of deeply divided left-wing parties and build momentum to increase the parties' chances of challenging conservative candidate Francois Fillon and Marine Le Pen， president of the far-right National Front party.
There are seven declared contenders for the primaries， including former ministers Aranud Montebourg and Benoit Hamon.
Ex-economy minister Emmanuel Macron and six other candidates have launched their own campaign， a fact likely to splinter votes and pulverize the Left parties' hope to maintain power in 2017.
Candidates have to submit their bid before Dec. 15. The two-round left-wing primaries are scheduled for Jan. 22 and 29.

, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Australian middle-income earners have been hit hardest by stagnating wage growth, a government report has found.
The first study of its kind in Australia, released by Treasurer Scott Morrison on Thursday night, found that the decade-long wage growth slump is a nationwide problem affecting every sector.
Wage increases in the last five years have happened at half the rate they did in the preceding decade when cost of living is factored in Nike Air Force 1 Flyknit Mens UK Sale
, the report found.
Fewer than 10 percent of Australian workers have experienced wage growth of more than 4 percent, down from 40 percent in 2,000.
"While the recent jobs growth has been great for those 800,000 Australians and their families Nike Air Force 1 Flyknit UK Sale
, for 11.5 million other Australian workers it has been a long time since most of them have had a decent pay rise," Morrison told the Business Council of Australia in a speech on Thursday night.
"As we know, wages grew by a subdued 1.9 percent through the year to the June quarter 2017 - the slowest annual growth in at least 20 years."
Workers with a university education were among the hardest hit with their wages experiencing slower growth than those with no post-school qualifications.
"This is not a problem affecting one or two states in isolation, nor is it centred on certain industries or pay grades -- it affects those on awards Nike Air Force 1 Low Womens UK Sale
, collective agreements or individual agreements alike, and ... those in regional areas as much as those in cities," Morrison said.
"The bills jammed under their fridge magnets at home, in particular the ones you can't avoid like power Nike Air Force 1 Low Mens UK Sale
, rent, rates or the mortgage, are not going anywhere."
The report, which was commissioned by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull earlier in 2017 suggested that wage growth was picking up after a 20-year slump but Morrison warned that the outlook remained bleak for most workers.
It found that wages in capital cities are 20 percent better than in rural areas but the cost of living compensated for that difference.
"The facts also debunk the populist theory that soft wages growth has been contributing to growing income inequality. It is in fact the opposite Nike Air Force 1 Low UK Sale
," Morrison said.
"As I have said on numerous occasions, unlike many other advanced economies, our tax and welfare system has protected Australians against rising inequality since the Global Financial Crisis."
