two-time Gold Glove winner was

NEW YORK — The Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t currently occupying a playoff spot Graham Gano Jersey , but manager Dave Roberts spoke confidently Wednesday about playing in the postseason. New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway, on the other hand, is beginning to sound like a skipper who knows his team will be long forgotten by October.

Two teams headed in opposite directions will square off for the first time this season Friday night when the Mets host the Dodgers in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field.

Right-hander Zack Wheeler (2-5, 4.82 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Mets against Dodgers left-hander Alex Wood (2-5, 4.22).

Both teams are coming off series-deciding losses. The Mets suffered their third straight defeat Thursday when they fell to the host Colorado Rockies 6-4 in the finale of a four-game set. The visiting Dodgers were off Thursday after losing to the Chicago Cubs 4-0 in the last game of a three-game series Wednesday afternoon.

The series loss was the first in 10 series for the Dodgers (38-35), who are 21-9 since dropping two of three to the Miami Marlins from May 15 to May 17. The hot streak vaulted them from fourth place in the National League West to second place during the surge and gained 5 1/2 games on the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks, who hold a 2 1/2 game lead heading into Friday’s action.

In addition, Los Angeles has moved two games behind the Washington Nationals in the race for the second NL wild card.

The Dodgers did all this despite getting little to no contributions from stars such as Justin Turner, Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill, all of whom have been on the disabled list for the last five weeks, and Cody Bellinger DJ Chark Jersey , who has struggled most of the season. No wonder Roberts sounded so confident after Wednesday’s loss.

“We’re going to be somewhere in October,” Roberts told reporters. “I can’t speak to the opponent, but we’re going to be somewhere.”

It will take a miracle for the Mets (31-41) to be anywhere but a golf course when the playoffs begin. New York, which has lost 40 of 60 since an 11-1 start, is 11 1/2 games out of first place in the NL East and 8 1/2 games back in the wild-card race.

The Mets’ slide has been marked by extreme highs and lows on both sides of the ball. They have scored 42 runs in the last six games, a span in which the pitching staff posted a 5.14 ERA.

New York scored just 42 runs in 17 games from May 28 through June 15, during which its pitchers posted a 4.13 ERA.

“There’s no magic pill or magic wand to make everything sync up at the same time,” Callaway told reporters Thursday afternoon. “I think that’s been the tale of our season so far. Even when we’re not winning games, we have a part of us that’s going good. We just have trouble getting (everything) to sync up at the same time so we can get on a good run again.”

Wheeler didn’t factor into the decision in his most recent start on Sunday, when he gave up two runs in six innings as the Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3. Wood won the last time he took the mound last Saturday when he allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings in the Dodgers’ 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Wheeler lost his lone career start against the Dodgers on June 19, 2017 T.J. Lang Jersey , when he surrendered seven runs in two innings as the Mets fell 10-6. Wood is 0-3 with a 3.94 ERA in eight career starts against the Mets.

It’s a whole new beginning for Manny Machado after months of uncertainty. Perfect time for a new number, too.

One with an LA story and a Baltimore past.

Machado joined the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday after coming over in a blockbuster trade with the Orioles during the All-Star break, putting one of baseball’s premier players on one of the game’s marquee teams. Batting in the second slot, ahead of young slugger Max Muncy and old friend Matt Kemp, he had two hits and walked twice in Los Angeles’ 6-4 victory at Milwaukee.

Muncy thought he might hear from Machado about his No. 13 after the deal, and he joked about possibly just having a new jersey when he arrived at Miller Park. But the 26-year-old Machado decided to try No. 8 with the Dodgers – Kobe Bryant’s first number with the Los Angeles Lakers, and the same number Hall of Fame shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. wore with the Orioles.

A nod to his past and his future.

”I wanted to change it up,” said Machado, who grounded a single into right field in his first at-bat with his new team. ”New beginning, new journey, new team Clayton Geathers Jersey , so I wanted to go that route. At the end of the day, I have to throw an athlete out there. Huge Kobe fan growing up.”

Bryant won five NBA titles in 20 seasons with Los Angeles, while the Dodgers haven’t won the World Series since 1988. That elusive championship is clearly on the minds of everyone with Los Angeles after the deal for Machado.

”It’s nothing we haven’t had every year that I’ve been here. It’s the same,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. ”We’re expected to win the World Series. That hasn’t changed.”

It’s a much different situation for Machado, who went from one of baseball’s worst teams to the top of the NL West. Machado made it to the playoffs twice with Baltimore, losing to the New York Yankees in the 2012 AL Division Series and falling to Toronto in the wild-card game two years ago.

The Dodgers are trying for their sixth consecutive division championship. They lost to the Astros in the World Series last year.

”I’m here to win. At the end of the day I want to win a ring,” said Machado, who is eligible for free agency after this season. ”Everyone in there wants to win a ring. They fell a little short last year and they want to get back and win it. Whatever I can do to make the process easier or better as a team, I’m all for it.”

The Dodgers, who optioned outfielder Andrew Toles to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Machado, are just looking for more of the same from the four-time All-Star. Machado hit .315 with 24 homers and 65 RBIs in 96 games with Orioles while making a seamless move from third base to shortstop.

”I think everybody knows what he’s capable of doing. His track record speaks for itself Peyton Manning Jersey ,” Kemp said. ”He’s one of the best right-handed hitters in baseball, one of the defensive players in baseball. I mean his accolades, it’s pretty impressive for as young as he is.”

Machado had spent his entire career with Baltimore. He posted a goodbye letter to the Orioles on Instagram.

”Thank you Birdland! You are forever in my heart!” he wrote.

Machado and Kemp snapped a selfie together during Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Washington. The Dodgers and Orioles finalized the swap for five prospects the following day, but Machado said the picture had nothing to do with the possible deal.

”It was kind of out there a little bit,” he said. ”It was possible, not 100 percent sure. I just wanted to take a picture with everyone who was on second base and it just happened to be that Matt was the first one to get there. Me and Matt go way back, taking a picture with him, those memories will never be forgotten.”

Now they get a chance to make some more memories.

Roberts said he plans to play Machado at third at some point, and the two-time Gold Glove winner was receptive to the idea of some time at his first position in the majors. But he wants Machado to get acclimated to life with the Dodgers first.

”It’s exciting,” Roberts said. ”I messed with a lot of different lineups. Obviously he makes our club considerably better.”
